Dancing created a pathway for me towards a radical reimagination of what it means to be alive by being the very thing I started to reimagine. Aliveness demands that I move towards a kind of performance that speaks to my lived realities, binds to the relationships that I am in, and provides consensual grounds for the reproductive labor of stewarding fluids across time. Through dance, I honor and dishonor blood, water, and the others I will not name just yet.
In Red Eye Theatre’s Works in Progress cohort, I created Sani- the planet of disruption, in which I ask the question, “How do relate to the things you will know, just not yet?” and dance at the edge of disrupted memory and failed articulation. The piece featured projection design by Boo McCaleb and an altar including ceramic pieces created with Sayge Carroll and Boniat Ephrem.
In residency at Rosy Simas Danse, I explored interacting with ancestral objects like my grandmother’s sari and archival footage from Kalakshetra while in pursuit of finding emergent movement- something ‘new’.
